ABSTRACT

Urban resilience and urban sustainability have become key concepts in urban research and they are prominent ideas guiding policy in the face of urbanization as a global megatrend. As boundary-spanning normative concepts, they challenge and facilitate communication across scientific disciplines as well as exchange and coordination between and among representatives from science, policymaking, and practice. We discuss the origins of urban resilience and urban sustainability, as well as their similarities and differences by structuring the discussion around four key topics underpinning both concepts. We plead for a context-related assessment of both concepts in science and policy, acknowledging their advantages and constraints.
