This chapter explores historical memory and the human dimensions of Partition riots in three different books written by three writers of Pakistani origin, each employing a different genre. The events leading to Partition, the idealism expressed by the leaders of India and Pakistan on their respective Independence Days and the subsequent announcement of the Radcliffe award demarcating the boundaries, followed by a cataclysm and the largest migration in history create a narrative which unites fiction, poetry and life writing. The writings overall juxtapose tales of great horror with those of great heroism, leading to extraordinary encounters, unexpected apologies and unusual friendships.
