Abstract

In 1996, the Uganda Women’s Writers Association launched FEMRITE Publications Ltd to promote women’s voices in literary production and contribute to cultural development in Uganda. Since its establishment, this literary organization has produced over thirty titles which include novels, short story anthologies, collections of poetry and life-writing, a popular magazine and a literary journal. Above publishing, the organization has regularly arranged literary residencies, school visits, public readings, and kept up a reading and writing circle in the yard of their own house in Kampala. Firmly rooted in the Ugandan context, then, and working with and towards local audiences and target groups, FEMRITE is nevertheless currently an organization involved in international collaborations and recognized across the African continent and abroad.
