Abstract

This chapter examines the widely varied phenomenon of behaviors by interactive online audiences that are transgressive, in that they entail norm violations. It identifies some dimensions along which instances of such behavior vary and describes three contrasting cases in terms of their nature and their impacts. It concludes with suggestions for future research and implications for social media users and platform owners.
