ABSTRACT
From the 1850s to 1900, almost two million immigrants from Great Britain, the United States and continental Europe arrived in Canada. Early studies that analyse the frontier of settlement asked, as this chapter does: Where did settlers establish themselves? When did they settle? What was the role of railroads in promoting settlement? These questions have in common the importance of space in the evaluation of the particular area.
