ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on philanthropy as a form of social relationship developed by third sector organizations. Although the broadest definition of philanthropy is privately providing and volunteering for public purposes, Asian researchers often associate it with the West, especially the USA. This chapter focuses on philanthropy as a US concept and how the concept has resonated in Asia. It also discusses how philanthropic organizations are networked, explores new trends in philanthropy, and discusses future issues that will shape philanthropic activity.
