ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights an important trend: Asia is witnessing a surge in the visibility of, and organization around, LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex) and SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) related rights and advocacy. Maree draws on ongoing collaborative work on the critical deployment of queer theories from the contested locale of “Japan” and “Asia” to engage with civil society. She argues for increased critical readings of the representations of queer lives, and discussion of the contexts that both shape and trouble localized demands for rights.
