ABSTRACT

This chapter considers one of the most impactful activisms recently observed in East Asia: youth activism. Rowen traces youth connections, collaborations, and contestations within and between particular societies and polities, situating the histories of Asian youth activism in a national and transnational context. Employing three cases—the Taiwan Sunflower Student Movements, the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement, and the Japanese SEALDs (Students Emergency Action for Liberal Democracy–s) actions, he examines continuities and ruptures between past patterns and the new and unfolding modes of action.
