ABSTRACT

Research in health geography is typically concerned with variations in human health across places and spaces. We are often seeking to identify health determinants, the conditions in different settings that may be detrimental or beneficial to health. The nature of these systems is such that these relationships cannot be described or predicted with certainty or in simple terms. Therefore, the idea of risk is very prominent in our thinking. Discourses about risk incorporate diverse ideas and concepts and may be expressed in various ways. This chapter considers risk conceptualized as a combination of hazard and vulnerability as well as opportunity and resilience.
