ABSTRACT

The general purpose of this chapter is to illustrate how modern specialised e-lexicography focusing on user needs and use situations can innovate both in theory and in practice. The specific purpose is to present an innovative specialised French monolingual dictionary of wine tasting and wine knowledge communication. Called Oenolex (Leroyer et al. 2016), this online dictionary is constructed on the tenets of the function theory of lexicography (Fuertes-Olivera 2012, 2013; Fuertes-Olivera and Tarp 2014) and is unique in the light of a number of lexicographic parameters when compared to conventional wine dictionaries. These parameters include a strong focus on interdisciplinary dictionary management, original data generation and acquisition, and corpus compilation and processing, including lexicographic use of an oral corpus (the corpus being fully integrated and accessible, and thus at the heart of the dictionary), automated knowledge extraction processes, enhanced search functionalities, and cutting edge database and Internet technology. Moreover, what makes Oenolex unique is its strongly embedded user orientation and genuine purpose, as all lexicographic issues have been managed with a view to satisfy punctual, 1 lexicographically relevant information needs that have been identified and stipulated by the intended users themselves. In this chapter, we will very briefly introduce the relationship between wine and dictionaries and other lexicographic information tools on wine and will outline the genesis of Oenolex. We will then expand on the processes and innovative parameters that have been used in its construction and include a few examples of articles to illustrate its search and display functionalities. In the conclusion, we will address future perspectives concerning the development of the dictionary, and we will raise some implications for further research and innovation in specialised e-lexicography.
