ABSTRACT

Keeping in view the status of ‘e-lexicography’ at the global level it is possible to say that Hindi e-lexicography has just taken the first step with regard to the great deal of e-lexicographical research and issues that have become relevant for the future. The status of Hindi lexicography has to be considered with respect to the past achievements within the social, cultural, and educational context of India before independence and the works done after it. In the present chapter we take a look at the development of Hindi lexicography before and after independence. In the next section, we present the technical and lexical development for the use of Hindi in computers in the post-independence era. This will be followed by a brief account of the publication of e-dictionaries and the development of the e-lexicographical tradition. Keeping in view the current status of e-lexicography databases and development of information science, we explore in the next section the core issues and the topics that require dedicated research as well as the resources for expansion and consolidation of Hindi e-lexicography. In the final section, we will explore the possibilities that the future holds for expansion of electronic dictionaries and e-lexicographical research in future. We conclude that a great deal of work and dedicated research is required for Hindi e-lexicography to make a mark and its relevance in India as well as at the global level.
