ABSTRACT

This study compares the approaches of Kurdish mass media and Kurdish social media run by non-professional individuals toward emigration of Kurds to Europe during the 2015 refugee crisis. Textual and visual content analysis of the media showed that, while Kurdish mass media discouraged emigration, Kurdish Facebook administrators encouraged Kurds to emigrate to Europe. It seems that differences in governance policies between social media run by non-professional individuals and the mass media form different approaches to immigration policies of Kurdish refugees from Iraqi Kurdistan.
