ABSTRACT
This study aims to describe the institutes of political asylum and refuge in Latin America in order to showcase the peculiarities of each one, as well as the zones of intersection between them. It begins by describing both institutes in general, then presents the regional aspects of refugee status in Latin America, and, in this sense, turns to the contributions of the Cartagena Declaration and its revisional process and the Inter-American human rights system, which highlights the region’s human rights approach towards refugee and political asylees. This chapter stems from an interest in describing the enlargement of the protection space in Latin America to forced migrants, who suffer persecution through political asylum and refuge, and adopts a descriptive tone so as to present this still relatively unknown landscape.
