ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the theory and method of Jean Gebser (1905–1973) as it is used in communication and related disciplines. The chapter covers the five consciousness structures, as well as the ideas of mutation, integrality, and systasis. It advocates using this as a holistic and humanizing approach to the study of culture.
