ABSTRACT

Defining music making as an emotional praxis the chapter offers firstly an explanation for the close relationship of music, body, memory and emotion. Based on that the chapter shows that the emotional impact of music lies not in its structure, but in its social usage. In order to highlight situations in which music served as a form of comfort, a tool of manipulation and a means of violence the chapter takes up examples from twentieth-century German history.
