ABSTRACT

Except in coastal marshes and other flat areas, gravity causes most deposits to move downslope. The movement usually involves a combination of processes that may operate together or at different times of the year in response to seasonal changes in the weather. There is an abundant body of literature on the subject from all climatic regions, and this chapter will examine some of the major processes and resultant landforms that are the product of the influence of seasonal frost or permafrost affecting predominantly finer grained material. The effects on coarse grained, blocky material will be dealt with in Chapter 9.
