ABSTRACT

Present-day construction on permafrost ground utilizes one or several specialized techniques to minimize the problems encountered with thaw-sensitive and frost-susceptible soils. Various combinations of these basic techniques are used in almost all construction projects carried out in permafrost regions. Choice of the method or methods used for buildings depends on the type of structure, the weight of the objects to be stored in it, the properties of the substrate, the climate, and the drainage conditions. Along linear right-of-ways, the choice of method will usually vary according to the changing microenvironments that are being traversed.
