ABSTRACT
This chapter features Chinese environmental NGOs as a rapid-growing and important force in environmental protection in China that plays the role of mediator between the government and the public. By presenting and analyzing two cases from the early decades of the 21st century, the chapter also shows various aspects of the development of Chinese environmental NGOs, including management techniques and communication strategies. While environmental NGOs in China as a whole have led to the government being more open to the public, the fact remains that these organizations have little say in government policy-making. The chapter concludes, therefore, with a remark from an NGO leader that, “In China, only the government can solve environmental problems.”
