ABSTRACT

The relationship between videogames and sexuality is complex and contested. From moral panic over representations of sexuality in games (Karlsen, 2014; Brathwaite, 2013) to discussions of the medium’s immature treatment of sexual themes (Krzywinska, 2012; Gallagher, 2012) to the science fiction-esque blurring of technology and the body through teledildonics (Krzywinska, 2012; Brathwaite, 2013), sex occupies an uncomfortable space within the medium of videogames. Perhaps because of an association of games and play with childhood and an association of sex and sexualities with adulthood (Brown, 2015; Sjöblom, 2015), there is discomfort regarding the representation and treatment of sex as something playful. This persistent separation between sex and play continues despite a growing culture of adult play in other areas of daily life.
