ABSTRACT
The Anthropocene emerged as a novel and powerful paradigm in the last two decades. The concept signifies changing perceptions of humanity and its relationship with the non-human environment, by asking if we live in a new geological era in which humans are the main force altering planetary ecosystems. This chapter introduces the Anthropocene concept and the debates surrounding what it means in terms of these transformations. It specifically focuses on how democracy can be imagined in this new era and the conditions for democratic governance under a new set of restraints, since the institutions of Holocene cannot tackle the problems of the Anthropocene.
