ABSTRACT

Agriculture was the dominant activity in most societies until the twentieth century. It still remains, as recently as 2003, the largest economic sector with 40 percent of the active world population working in agriculture. Food security has become a primary concern for contemporary societies, which will need to double crop production by the year 2050 in order to feed the world’s population.
