It is my contention that Arab nationalism as a unit of analysis is no longer useful or viable. We therefore have to go back to the drawing board and grapple with the study of Arab identity and its metamorphoses over time. Arab identity has yet to find its concrete definition or assert its presence as a separate and fully formed entity. It could be argued that this is the result of either internal weaknesses or overwhelming external forces, on the one hand, or the direct consequence of our changing perceptions of identities and their historical trajectories, on the other hand.
