ABSTRACT

Throughout the ages, festivals have been intimately entwined with the environment. Communities have come together to celebrate harvests and signify changes of seasons. However, in the modern age, and until recently, many festivals have been a reflection of a consumption-focussed society – leaving legacies of irresponsible resource use, environmental degradation, disruption to habitats, discarded waste, and immeasurable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Jones 2017). Fortunately, as we progress towards sustainable development, festivals are now coming full circle back to our environmental roots. These days, regardless of their purpose, festivals acknowledging their connection with or impact on the environment is de rigueur.
