ABSTRACT

Earle Hyman was one of the first African American actors to rise above the obstacles that were profoundly overwhelming to Black actors in the first seven decades of the twentieth century. Hyman is known in America for his roles in the plays of Shakespeare, O’Neill, Pinter, Soyinka, Albee, Fugard, Beckett, Hansberry, and Chekhov. What is less well known is Hyman’s tremendous Norwegian career. This chapter explores Hyman’s significance and importance in Scandinavian theatre that has been undocumented in America.
