ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of three institution builders: Anita Bush, Barbara Ann Teer, and Ellen Stewart. Each founded a theatre company in New York City in an effort to provide opportunities for actors, directors, and designers to practice their crafts. They were twentieth-century theatre pioneers, yet their contributions to American theatre are often relegated to a footnote in the annals of American theatre research and history.
