ABSTRACT

After founding the North Carolina Black Repertory Company in 1979 in Winston-Salem, NC, Larry Leon Hamlin created the National Black Theatre Festival, a celebration of Black theatre held biannually since 1989. The NBTF provides an opportunity for theatre artists and audiences to gather for six busy days of performances, workshops, and networking. With the vision to create a festival to strengthen Black theatre companies and to honor Black theatre artists, Hamlin created an institution that continues to thrive.
