ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on a panel discussion of best practices for creating sustainable African American theatre companies. Experts share their collective wisdom as experienced artistic directors, founders, fundraisers, managers, grant writers, and a senior program officer who funds creative arts organizations. Panelists include celebrated leaders of the theatre community who manage African American theatres as old as 45 and as young as 4 years old. Theatres include the Black Ensemble Theater, Ensemble Theatre of Houston, eta Creative Arts Foundation, Ms. Nikki’s Traveling Bag, and New Venture Theatre.
