ABSTRACT

W.E.B. Du Bois’ contributions to the development of African American drama as critic, producer, and supporter during the Negro Renaissance period as well as his disagreement with Alain Locke over the goals of Black drama are well-documented, but Du Bois’ own efforts as a playwright are less well known. This chapter focuses primarily on the creative aspects of Du Bois’ vision of African American drama as a catalyst for political and social change.
