ABSTRACT

In this chapter, contemporary Afro-Latinx theatre themes are explored. They expose racial differences between US Latinx, Indigenous, and Latin American cultures by bringing to light prejudice and oppression within these cultures. Afro-Latinx theatre represents intersectionality and diversity within Black and Latinx culture. Afro-Latinx theatre creators have been writing, producing, and acting in Latinx theatre for years as a way to counteract the lack of representation of their own identity onstage. This chapter acknowledges their work through an exploration of the most common themes found in their work.
