ABSTRACT

Big Chief Darryl Montana of the New Orleans Black Indian tribe Yellow Pocahontas has made Indian suits for more than 50 years. Beginning at age 9, he learned the meticulous techniques and practices from his father, legendary Big Chief Allison “Tootie Montana,” and sometimes spent 9 to 11 months creating a suit. He has distinguished himself with the creation of unique and stunning six-foot crowns that accompany his suits. Though Big Chief Montana retired last year, he continues to educate people about the practice, to mentor young men and women, and to work tirelessly to preserve and promote the Black Indian tradition.
