ABSTRACT

Hip Hop has enjoyed a sustained and profound influence on youth culture for over 40 years. With so many of today’s students bringing a Hip Hop sensibility to the classroom, many scholars and educators are ill-equipped to facilitate the teaching of Hip Hop beyond its perceived surface entertainment purposes. This chapter shows educators how to get students on their feet and engaged in the act of performance through the application of proven, innovative Hip Hop theatre exercises, assignments, and projects that champion self-expression and empower students to affirm, “I’m here and what I have to say matters.”
