ABSTRACT
Tseltal and Tsotsil, previously spelled Tzeltal and Tzotzil, are spoken in a contiguous area in central and eastern Chiapas, Mexico, by more than 400,000 speakers each. According to Kaufman (1972), they split from each other around 1,400 years ago. I will refer jointly to both languages as Tseltalan.
