ABSTRACT

There are six specific eating and feeding disorders included in the DSM-5 (APA, 2013): pica, rumination disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). Professional association screening guidelines and measures typically focus on the last three to four (Academy for Eating Disorders [AED], 2016; Golden et al., 2003; Lock, La Via, & the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) Committee on Quality Issues, 2015; Rosen & the American Association of Pediatrics [AAP] Committee on Adolescence, 2010) and we will do the same in this chapter. First, we will review disorder specific considerations pertaining to AN, BN, BED, and ARFID in pediatric populations. Then we will give an overview of methods to identify eating disorders in pediatric primary care including questions for clinical interview, possible presenting physical symptoms, and currently available screening tools. Finally, we will outline guidelines for clinical decision making regarding further assessment and treatment and present a case illustrating the methods summarized in the chapter.
