ABSTRACT

There are a number of potential negative outcomes associated with adolescent substance use, including an increased risk of substance use disorders and higher rates of mortality. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the use of substance-specific screening tools in pediatric primary care settings. However, due to a number of potential barriers, the regular use of screening tools is not widely applied. The following chapter outlines some of the most commonly used screening and assessment tools while highlighting the potential feasibility and practicality of their implementation in busy primary care settings.
