ABSTRACT

Psychologists have the opportunity to play a central role in addressing the considerable developmental and behavioral health needs of children and adolescents in primary care settings. As specialists in psychological assessment, psychologist contributions to screening, evaluation, and outcome measurement in primary care are of particular importance. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for incorporating psychological assessment methods in primary care. We describe the integration of behavioral health services into pediatric primary care settings more broadly to provide a context for considering the role of assessment and suggest ways in which traditional assessment strategies may need to be adapted to be appropriate for the setting. This chapter serves as a broad overview to set the stage for later chapters that address specific assessment instruments and procedures.
