ABSTRACT

Visual representations of complex myths were elaborated in the Oxus Civilization through stone and metal statuettes and vessels, seals, or terracotta figurines. A dominant female figure interacted with hybrid genies and wild animals, among luxuriant plants and flowers. The rich and varied imagery has an entirely original flavor and style, expressing a mythological construction of the cosmos that was probably inspired by contacts with Mesopotamia and Iran, and in some measure was shared with the Indus. It may have led to Zoroastrianism and even endured into Islam.
