ABSTRACT

Despite many years of excavations at Gonur Depe, very little information on animal exploitation has been retrieved due to the lack of kitchen waste. This chapter deals with the data gathered in the last ten years. Most of it concerns cattle and ovicaprines, which were the main meat sources. Pigs and camels are also present. From the analysis of the specific meat pieces it is demonstrated that the inhabitants around the palace complex were not directly engaged in livestock breeding, confirming the special status of the Gonur settlement as an administrative and cult center.
