ABSTRACT
In this essay, I explore the course of modern art in Portugal, particularly the reception of expressionism. In this context, my central questions are: How did modern art in Portugal develop? To what extent might the Portuguese art scene have been inspired by artistic trends and movements from other countries, for example from France and Germany? Can we ascertain modernist aspirations in both painting and sculpture? And more specifically, does a genuine Portuguese expressionism exist?
