ABSTRACT
To write a brief history of the scholarship surrounding “madness” in Africa produces a series of problems, none of them solvable within the limits of a single book chapter. They must be entertained therefore as opening caveats, to be stitched into corners of a narrative that will inevitably be slimmer and less nuanced than the history itself deserves.
