ABSTRACT
Politics raises questions of authority and access to power, introducing the potential for change, whereas monarchy stands for continuity and stability, maintaining authority through time. Though in reality these two models can be modified and manipulated, the two systems operate with quite different procedures for succession to the seat of power and authority; it is, then, to succession that we turn if we want to identify the distinctive features and the difficulties posed by either of these two models.
