ABSTRACT

With the reassuring rustle of parchment in the reading room, archivists have tended to move at a slow and steady pace for centuries. But traditional principles and practices have undergone a considerable overhaul in recent years thanks to the advent of digital archives. The methodology surrounding digital archives, requires new skills, innovative techniques and fresh mind-sets. The greatest challenge lies in the fact that today’s methodology will require constant adaption to keep up with the fast-paced technological environment. Nothing stays still for long in the world of information technology (IT). On the plus side, this surely has to be one of the most exciting times to be a professional archivist. The dynamism of current record keeping and variety of file formats would stun our forebears, while our capacity to make archives accessible to audiences around the world has never been more empowering.
