ABSTRACT

Theatre of the Oppressed NYC has been in existence since early 2011, almost seven years, at the time of writing. From its inception, the vision of TONYC has been to be a citizen of NYC in the sense Boal stated: not just to live in a place, but also to change it. TONYC is not simply a place in New York City where people practice and train in Theatre of the Oppressed (TO); in fact, at its core, it’s hardly that. Much more, it is a resource for New York City’s change-makers (in neighborhoods, government, and nonprofits) to bring radical fun, creativity, and the experiences of those most impacted by oppressive systems into existing movements for social justice—and into legislative chambers, in order to advance those movements.
