ABSTRACT

Injuries in professional sports cost organisations billions of US dollars every year. In addition, comes the personal traumas for the players affected by the injuries where they miss games and critical periods in their careers. Accordingly, appropriate systems and regimens for injury rehabilitation is a natural part of elite sport, and all teams have this in place. However, arguably, a smarter approach to deal with sport injuries is to try to avoid them in the first place. In this chapter, we build on over two decades of experience working in professional sports to look at how to reduce the risk of injury incidence, and to outline a proper philosophy, where it is a science and where it is an art, and to emphasise the importance of communication, among other things.
