ABSTRACT

During a radio-interview in Denmark a few months ago, the interviewer said there were thousands of young coaches who “would give their right arm to be in your shoes”. I said “I don’t think they would”. A bit cocky, yes, but it’s a comment I stand by because I don’t think many people are willing to sacrifice enough to achieve what they actually set out to do. Indeed, if I look at one area where I have done something that sets me apart from other professionals in my field, it has been my willingness to make sacrifices. I personally don’t view the choices I’ve made as sacrifices per se, but sacrifices they have definitely been. Deciding to not drink alcohol so I could allocate all my time, energy, and focus towards my career as well as working for free when you just want to learn. You use all your money on study-trips, and every time money does come in you use it on something that can develop you. When you travel around to different clubs, just to visit and get inspiration, and you don’t have any money and have to stay in shitty hotels and B&B’s just to be there. Postponing starting a family so as to first build up your career. All of these things have I done for ten years to get to where I am today.
