ABSTRACT

Contemporary migration from Bolivia to Argentina dates back to the colonial period. However, it gathered significance during the second half of the twentieth century, given that Argentina became the residence of the greatest number of Bolivians living abroad, particularly in the City and the Province of Buenos Aires. Current estimates suggest over 1 million Bolivians live in Argentina. Most of them find work in unskilled occupations in the garment sector, construction, informal trading, and domestic work. The agricultural sector is also significant. The current organisations, particularly of younger migrants, linked to work in the garment sector represent a rupture with traditional ways of organising of the Bolivian collectivity, which for decades has been active in organising folkloric activities. These new initiatives show novel discursive practices and methods of organisation.
