Abstract

This chapter reviews afresh the relationships between politics and administration/ management of public services. It reviews long established historical studies, and more recent research that has extended and developed that field of study. It sets this in the context of contemporary empirical approaches to developing local governance and illustrates this with brief examples from Italian local governments.
