ABSTRACT

Climate change is with great certainty one of the most complex issues that the world is facing today. Previously seen as an issue of environment, today it is considered to be a multi-faceted issue, which cuts across social, economic, and many other dimensions of society. This chapter focuses on issues related to climate change and human rights with a closer look at how the South Asian region and its population are affected by climate change. It observes impacts felt in the region, and seeks to discuss options for moving forward in addressing the adverse impacts of climate change through a review of international law related to climate change and human rights, as well as policies and commitments made at the regional level, with a particular focus on actions by the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to address climate change at the regional level.
