Abstract

The importance of gender, both past and present, is now widely recognized in archaeology. There is, in fact, a substantial literature—example, Balme and Beck 1995; Classen 1992; Conkey 1991; Di Leonardo 1991; Du Cros and Smith 1993; Gero and Conkey 1991; Gilchrist 1994, 1999; Hartman and Messer-Davidow 1991; Hays-Gilpin and Whitley 1998; Meskell 1995, 1999, 2000; Moore 1994, 1999; Nelson 1997; Sorenson 2000; Warren and Hackney 2000.
