ABSTRACT

Chinese Martial Arts is generally known as a physical, mental, and spiritual practice with a history of thousands of years. It includes a series of disciplines which consists of specific systems developed out of the necessity of defending themselves from the harms of nature and attacks of other people. China has a long history of struggles and wars dating back to the tribal era like all other countries. In A History of Chinese Martial Arts, Zhang (1997) noted that Chinese martial arts originated from the battles in primitive society and started to take shape in the pre-Qin period when different schools of martial arts came into being. He pointed out that the art of attack and defense should be considered as one of the fundamental characteristics of martial arts.
