ABSTRACT

In September 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Central to this Agenda are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which ‘set out the bold and transformative step urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path’ (UNGA 2015). The 2030 Agenda recognises that sport can be ‘an important enabler of sustainable development’ (ibid.: 37). This represents the first time that the intentional use of sport-based approaches to contribute to sustainable development, or Sport for Development and Peace (SDP), has been recognized in an overarching global development plan and policy agenda.
